Teamwork Makes Our Dream Work

While it’s true that no one at Point of Life Resource Center receives a salary, our volunteer-driven organization still faces essential operational costs. To keep our programs running smoothly and effectively, we need your help funding the backbone of our volunteer efforts. This includes expenses like web hosting, company phones, and technology for coordinating services; printing educational materials and outreach flyers; fuel and maintenance for our delivery vehicles; event supplies; volunteer training resources; insurance; and general office supplies. These costs may not be as visible as diapers or formula, but they are just as critical to fulfilling our mission.

Many grants and funding opportunities are restricted to specific types of aid—such as purchasing tangible goods or providing direct services—which leaves a major gap in covering our day-to-day operational needs. Without support for these behind-the-scenes essentials, we cannot reach the families who depend on us. Your donation toward volunteer support ensures that we can continue showing up—fully prepared and equipped—for the parents and infants who need us most. Every dollar helps us extend our reach and deliver help with dignity and compassion.

The average administrative—or "overhead"—cost for small nonprofits typically falls between 15% and 25% of their total annual budget. This range encompasses essential expenses such as technology, insurance, communications, volunteer coordination, and other infrastructure costs that support the organization's mission

FAQ

What is Point of Life Resource Center?

Point of Life Resource Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families in crisis across Jefferson, Shelby and Chilton counties in Alabama. We provide essential resources to parents and infants facing poverty, including diapers, formula, baby gear, and access to mental health support through our Mindful Beginnings program. Our initiatives, such as Bassinets for Babies, focus on creating safer, healthier environments for newborns by distributing new and gently used bassinets to families in need. Through compassion, community collaboration, and practical aid, Point of Life works to uplift families and give every child a stronger, safer start.

How do you make sure my gifts to Chariti are spent wisely?

  • We have developed clear budgeting and financial oversight
  • We report regularly to the IRS (Form 990) to show how funds are spent
  • We evaluate our programs for effectiveness to make sure we are making a measurable benefit and that our programs remain in alignment with our mission.
  • In addition to our annually published reports, we regularly keep our donors informed so they can understand how their contributions are making an impact

How do you know which children need help?

We partner with local private and government organizations who are in the best positions to identify at-risk children, including those lacking safe sleep spaces, basic supplies, or stable housing.

We have a structured application that asks about household income, number of dependents, current challenges, recent life changes, and program eligibility (SNAP, TANF, etc.) to ensure assistance goes to families that are most in need and to help us track ongoing support needs.

Through our public outreach, community events, social media, and local partnerships, families often self-identify their need and request assistance.

While we use predefined criteria to automatically approve eligible families, we also review requests on a case-by-case basis to ensure no family in crisis is turned away without thoughtful consideration.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and all donations made are tax deductible in the United States.

Where does my money actually go?

Nearly every dollar donated goes directly to helping families in crisis. The vast majority of our funds are used to provide essential items—like bassinets, diapers, formula, and emotional support—to parents and infants in need. A small portion helps cover basic administrative costs like event space rentals, technology, and outreach—tools that help us reach more people effectively. No one at Point of Life receives a salary; our entire team is made up of dedicated volunteers. Every contribution fuels our mission to create safer, stronger beginnings for vulnerable families.

I am in need or I know someone in need. How can I ask for help?

You should use the contact form on the website, call us, or email us.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Certain circumstances—such as receiving TANF, SNAP, or having a low income—may automatically qualify a family for support. However, other life challenges may also make you eligible. If you’re in need of assistance, we encourage you to check out the “get help” section of the website or reach out to us directly.

What types of donations do you accept?

We accept the following:

  • new baby items and family/household essentials
  • new school supplies
  • new or gently used bassinets
  • cash donations

On occasion we will also have a special event like a silent auction where we accept other items to be auctioned. If you have specific questions about an item you wish to donate that isn’t listed above, please contact us.
